Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Ralf-Eckhard Beyer#
After graduating as an engineer at the Ingenieurschule Wedel in 1975, Eckhard Beyer worked for several years in the industry. From 1978 to 1981 he completed a physics degree at the Technical University of Darmstadt and received his doctorate there to Dr.-Ing. Physics. From 1985, he worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen as the head of department for laser applications, later as deputy / provisional director of the institute. At the same time, he received a teaching assignment at the RWTH Aachen University and habilitated there in 1995.
In 1997, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Beyer was appointed professor at the Dresden University of Technology and until 30 September 2018 he was holder of the chair for laser and surface technology. In addition, from 2003 he was Director of the Institute of Production Engineering and from 2010 to the end of 2012 Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. From 1997 to 2018, he headed the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology in Dresden. Since 1st October 2018 Prof. Beyer is Senior Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical University of Dresden.
He is a member of academic committees such as the Laser Scientific Society, the Board of Stakeholders of the European Technology Platform Photonics 21, and the Board of Directors of the Laser Institute of America. He is also the holder of 60 patents. Eckhard Beyer is one of the pioneers in the development of applications of lasers and the transfer of these technologies into industrial production. His achievements include the development of the principle of the rotating hollow needle, which is used worldwide today to determine the properties of a laser beam. In 1994 he presented the first hybrid welding process for deep welding.
